Upgrading from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 should be easy if you regularly check for and remove the use of deprecated code. Instead, it is several smaller steps that are much easier to adopt. The best user benefit is that the path of Drupal 8 to 9 is not a sudden jump. This keeps us from refactoring too much like we did with previous Drupal versions, so we will not end up with an entirely reworked API.Feedback is provided based on this new code so it can be improved in Drupal 8. We can work out the issues in the new code in Drupal 8.All new (Drupal 9 ready) code gets deployed on Drupal 8 sites before Drupal 9 is even released.Instead of working on Drupal 9 in its own git branch from the start, we built most of Drupal 9 in Drupal 8. Drupal 9 was mostly already built in Drupal 8. It will be the same as the last Drupal 8 minor version with our own deprecated code removed and third-party dependencies updated. This means the upgrade experience will be smoother for core contributors, module authors, and site owners.ĭrupal 9 will be a cleaned-up version of Drupal 8. Instead of building a radically new version of Drupal in a separate codebase, Drupal 9 is being built in Drupal 8. The goal is to provide an easy-to-use readiness assessment for your site's migration to Drupal 9.The next major version of Drupal is targeted to be released on June 3, 2020. The module provides a graphical user interface on top of drupal-check. If you are a site owner, install the Upgrade Status module.
